What is CT Coronary Angiogram (CTCA)?
CT Coronary Angiography (CTCA) is a specialised CT scan that produces detailed images of the coronary arteries of the beating heart. It allows doctors to identify narrowing or blockages within the blood vessels that supply the heart muscle.
During the examination, a contrast agent is injected into a vein—usually in the arm—to enhance visualisation of the blood vessels. Medication may also be given, either orally or through a cannula, to slow the heart rate and improve image quality. These steps help ensure clear, accurate images for interpretation.
What is Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring?
Coronary artery calcium scoring is a non-invasive CT examination that measures the amount of calcium within the walls of the coronary arteries. This measurement reflects the presence of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and helps assess a person’s risk of heart attack or stroke over the next five to ten years.
Do I need an appointment for a Coronary Angiography?
Yes, all Coronary Angiography examinations are performed by appointment. You can book by phone, in person, or by sending through your referral. Our reception team will advise you of the next available appointment and any preparation required.
Do I need to prepare for my Coronary Angiography?
Our team will provide clear instructions at the time of booking. We recommend wearing a comfortable two-piece outfit, as you may be asked to change into a gown.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Bring the following items:
- Your referral from your doctor.
- Your Medicare or DVA card, if applicable.
- WorkCover or insurance details, if the examination relates to a work-related injury
What are the costs?
Most Medicare-eligible ultrasound examinations are bulk billed. If there are any out-of-pocket costs, our staff will advise you at the time of booking or when you arrive for your appointment.
When will my results be available?
Reports are typically completed within 24–48 hours. If your referral is marked as urgent, please let our team know so your examination and report can be prioritised.
