3D Mammography

3D Mammography

3D Mammography is an advanced breast imaging technique that uses low-dose X-Rays to create highly detailed images of breast tissue. It plays an important role in the early detection and diagnosis of breast conditions, including breast cancer, by identifying subtle changes such as small lumps or calcifications that may not be detectable during a physical examination.

FAQs

A mammogram uses a small amount of X-Ray to take clear images of the breast. Special equipment and gentle positioning help produce accurate images while keeping radiation exposure as low as possible. During the scan, the breast is briefly compressed to improve image quality. You may feel some pressure, but it only lasts a short time. If you feel uncomfortable at any point, please let the radiographer know and they will adjust the compression.

Another new technology is TOMOSYNTHESIS – here specialised machinery is used to obtain images of the breast at multiple angles, which a high powered computer manipulates to form a 3D image (or multiple images) of the breast. This reduces the amount of times the breast needs to be irradiated and also gives significantly more detail about specific parts of the breast. At Oran Park Radiology, Miranda, we have the latest 3D mammography equipment. This allows more detail, with higher accuracy in diagnosis, and so gives the patient and the referring doctor more peace of mind. 3D mammography allows the radiologist to detect abnormalities that are not detected by traditional mammography, often due to variations in the density of the breasts or due to the small size of the abnormalities. This increased detection helps radiologists detect breast cancers earlier than previously possible, allowing for better treatment options and improved outcomes.

Yes, mammograms are performed by appointment. Bookings can be made by phone, in person, or by sending through your referral.

The first step is confirming the details of the referral provided by your doctor, including the type of test requested, the area being examined and the clinical reason. You can bring the referral into our clinic, email or fax it to us (see Appointment Request), or read the details over the phone to our reception team. Our staff may also ask about previous mammograms or family history to help determine Medicare eligibility.

A qualified radiographer will explain the procedure and position you correctly to obtain clear diagnostic images. You may be asked to adjust your position briefly to capture different views. The imaging itself takes only a few minutes.

Once completed, the images are reviewed by a radiologist, and a detailed report is sent directly to your referring practitioner.

  • Your referral form from your doctor
  • Any previous mammogram images or reports, if available
  • Your Medicare or DVA card (if applicable)

One of our friendly radiographers will guide you through the process and answer any questions. You may be asked to change into a gown. During the examination, the breast is gently compressed for a short time to obtain clear images while keeping radiation exposure as low as possible. You may feel some pressure, but the procedure is quick and generally well tolerated.

The images are reviewed by a radiologist, and a report is sent to your referring doctor.

Costs depend on the type of mammogram and your Medicare eligibility:

  • Diagnostic mammograms that meet Medicare criteria will be eligible for a rebate.
  • Screening mammograms will involve a fully out-of-pocket cost

Our team will confirm any fees at the time of booking.

Breast imaging studies are reported by highly skilled, sub-specialist breast reporting Radiologists. Due to the highly skilled team involved in these studies, reports are typically available up to a week after your appointment time. If your referral indicates urgency, please let our team know so we can prioritise your results.
