Bone Mineral Density
Oran Park Radiology offers Bone Mineral Density (BMD) scanning using DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) technology. This low-dose X-ray examination provides precise measurement of bone density and helps assess bone strength, fracture risk and conditions such as osteoporosis. BMD scanning is fast, non-invasive and plays an important role in diagnosis, treatment planning and ongoing monitoring of bone health.
FAQs
What is a Bone Mineral Density (BMD) scan?
A BMD scan uses DEXA technology to measure bone density at clinically important sites, most commonly the lumbar spine and hip. The scan compares your bone density to established reference values, helping doctors identify bone loss and assess fracture risk.
What happens during the scan?
- You will lie comfortably on a scanning table
- The scanner passes over the required areas of the body
- The examination is painless and typically takes only a few minutes
Once completed, the images are reviewed by a radiologist and a report is sent to your referring doctor.
What Preparation is required?
- No special preparation is required
- Wearing a comfortable two-piece outfit is recommended
- You may be asked to change into a gown
Please advise our team if you have had previous BMD scans, as comparison with earlier studies can be helpful.
