Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of the body’s internal structures. It does not use radiation and is widely used to assess a broad range of medical conditions across many areas of the body.

At Oran Park Radiology, ultrasound examinations are performed by experienced sonographers using advanced equipment to provide accurate, high-quality imaging in a comfortable and supportive environment.

FAQs

Ultrasound works by transmitting sound waves into the body using a handheld device called a transducer. These sound waves reflect off internal organs and tissues, and a computer converts this information into detailed images displayed in real time.

Ultrasound is commonly used to examine organs and structures including:

  • Liver, kidneys and gallbladder
  • Uterus and ovaries
  • Abdominal and pelvic organs

It is also widely used in:

  • Obstetric imaging, including pregnancy dating, nuchal translucency, morphology and growth scans
  • Musculoskeletal imaging, allowing dynamic, real-time assessment of joints, tendons and muscles (such as the rotator cuff)
  • Interventional procedures, where ultrasound guidance assists with accurate placement of injections
  • Vascular imaging, including Doppler ultrasound to assess arteries and veins for conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), venous insufficiency and carotid artery disease

During the examination, a sonographer will guide you through the procedure and explain each step. Most ultrasounds are performed while you are lying on a bed, although some examinations may require you to sit or change position.

A small amount of clear gel is applied to the skin to help the transducer move smoothly and capture clear images. The transducer is gently moved over the area being examined. While the procedure is painless, the sonographer may apply some pressure to obtain optimal images. If you feel uncomfortable at any point, please let them know so adjustments can be made.

The images are reviewed by a radiologist, who prepares a report for your referring doctor.

Yes, all ultrasound examinations are performed by appointment. Bookings can be made by phone, in person, or by sending through your referral. Our reception team will advise on appointment availability and any preparation required.

Preparation depends on the type of ultrasound being performed. For example:

  • Abdominal ultrasounds may require fasting
  • Pelvic ultrasounds may require a full bladder

Specific instructions will be provided at the time of booking. We recommend wearing a comfortable two-piece outfit, as you may be asked to change into a gown. Please arrive a little early to allow time for any paperwork.

Please bring:

  • Your referral form from your doctor
  • Your Medicare or DVA card, if applicable
  • WorkCover or insurance details if the examination relates to a work-related injury

Ultrasound is considered a very safe examination. It does not use ionising radiation or iodine-based contrast agents and is suitable for use across a wide range of patients, including during pregnancy.

Most Medicare-eligible ultrasound examinations are bulk billed. If there are any out-of-pocket costs, our team will advise you at the time of booking or on arrival.

Reports are typically completed within 24–48 hours. If your referral is marked as urgent, please let our team know so your examination and report can be prioritised.
