Obstetric Imaging
Oran Park Radiology offers advanced 3D and 4D ultrasound imaging as part of our comprehensive obstetric and gynaecological services. These technologies complement standard 2D ultrasound by providing enhanced visualisation of fetal and pelvic structures, supporting clinical assessment and helping parents better understand their baby’s development. All Obstetric imaging is reported by sub-specialist obstetricians and gynaecologists.
FAQs
What is 3D ultrasound?
Standard 2D ultrasound creates images using thin slices of anatomy viewed one at a time. While these images are effective for diagnosis, they can be difficult for non-medical viewers to interpret.
3D ultrasound combines multiple 2D images to create detailed, life-like pictures of the baby or pelvic organs. No additional ultrasound energy is used compared to standard 2D imaging, and current evidence shows no adverse effects associated with this technology.
What is 4D ultrasound?
4D ultrasound adds movement to 3D images, with time being the fourth dimension. This allows real-time, moving images of the baby, similar to a video. 4D imaging can be helpful when assessing fetal movement, limb motion and certain heart structures.
Why offer 3D and 4D ultrasound?
While 2D ultrasound remains the foundation of obstetric and gynaecological diagnosis, 3D and 4D imaging can provide additional clinical and visual benefits.
In gynaecology, 3D ultrasound is particularly useful for assessing uterine shape and identifying internal abnormalities such as endometrial polyps.
In obstetrics, 3D ultrasound can assist in clarifying certain fetal conditions identified on 2D imaging, such as facial clefts or limb abnormalities, helping parents better understand the findings. More commonly, it allows clearer visualisation of the baby’s face. The addition of motion with 4D imaging may also assist in observing fetal heart structures, limb movement and natural behaviours such as yawning or smiling, which many parents find reassuring and bonding.
Can I always see a clear 3D or 4D image?
While we aim to obtain clear images wherever possible, 3D and 4D imaging is not always achievable. Image quality can be affected by factors such as fetal position, placental location and maternal body type.
The optimal time for 3D and 4D imaging is typically between 22 and 26 weeks of pregnancy, when amniotic fluid levels and fetal development are most favourable. Obtaining clear images later in pregnancy can be more challenging.
Do I need an appointment for an Ultrasound?
Yes, all ultrasound examinations are performed by appointment. You can book by phone, in person, or by sending through your referral. Our reception team will advise you of the next available appointment and any preparation required.
Do I need to prepare for my Ultrasound?
Preparation varies depending on the type of ultrasound being performed. For example:
- Abdominal ultrasounds may require fasting
- Pelvic ultrasounds may require a full bladder
Our team will provide clear instructions at the time of booking. We recommend wearing a comfortable two-piece outfit, as you may be asked to change into a gown. Please arrive a little early to allow time for any paperwork.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Bring the following items:
- Your referral from your doctor.
- Your Medicare or DVA card, if applicable.
- WorkCover or insurance details, if the examination relates to a work-related injury
What happens during the ultrasound?
A qualified sonographer will explain the procedure and support you throughout the examination. Most ultrasounds are performed while lying on a bed, although some may require you to sit or change position.
A small amount of gel is applied to the skin to allow the ultrasound probe to move smoothly and capture clear images. Images are viewed in real time and later reviewed by a radiologist, who prepares a report for your referring doctor.
What are the costs?
Some obstetric ultrasounds may incur an out of pocket cost. Our staff will advise you at the time of booking or when you arrive for your appointment.
When will my results be available?
Reports are typically completed within 24–48 hours. If your referral is marked as urgent, please let our team know so your examination and report can be prioritised.
